Join Slimstock: Rolf explains his time as a young professional

Rolf Aksglaede: Why did you decide to join Slimstock?

As Europe's leading inventory management specialist, Slimstock places a huge focus on developing up and coming talent: a key part of which is the company's Young Professionals Programme. This intensive development scheme is designed to help young professionals gain exposure to the real-life challenges that supply chain industry professionals are faced with on a daily basis.

Since joining Slimstock in December 2016 as a supply chain analyst, Rolf Aksglaede has taken full advantage of Slimstock’s Young Professional Programme. During his time with the company, Rolf has had the opportunity to support the inventory management processes of some of the UK’s leading businesses. What did you study at University?

Before joining Slimstock, I completed a BSc in Business Administration and Economics at the University of Southern Denmark. Following this, I also completed an MSc in Supply Chain Management at the Copenhagen Business School.

How much experience did you have before joining Slimstock?

Following my degree, I worked as both a freelance consultant and a procurement manager. As a freelance consultant, I specialised in sourcing and procurement. This often involved comparing the processes of the businesses I was working with the theory I studied at school with I was working with in order to develop a detailed analysis. As a procurement manager at a small FMCG company, I was responsible for ensuring that the right goods were always available in the right quantity. Sounds easy, right? Well unless you have a lot of money to spend, this is a huge challenge. Given the limited budget, we had to work hard to maximise the value of the available money and inventory. As a result, there was always a lot of focus on increasing the inventory turnover, optimising payment terms and improving supplier relations as well as sourcing in general.

"I really felt that the people in the interview were my kind of people: kind, fast moving and dynamic team players. This, coupled with the potential opportunities for personal development, made agreeing to join Slimstock a no brainer."

Why did you decide to join Slimstock?

Before attending a job fair, I received an email with a list of companies attending and Slimstock was one of them. Immediately, I could see that Slimstock’s specialist area was right up my street. Furthermore, I felt that my passions and interests aligned well with Slimstock’s core competencies. After meeting some of the Slimstock team at the event, I was invited to an interview. I really felt that the people in the interview were my kind of people: kind, fast moving and dynamic team players. This, coupled with the potential opportunities for personal development, made agreeing to join Slimstock a no brainer.

What kind of projects have you been working on?

I’ve only been at Slimstock for 2 months and already I have had the opportunity to work with the team to deliver 3 audits and 1 basic training session; attaining lots of knowledge in the process.

An audit at Slimstock is something we do for customers where we look into their KPI’s and assess how well they are performing. Based on this, we look for anything that is out of the norm and identify ways to help them improve. Even for the best performing businesses, we try to make suggestions on how our customers can make marginal gains. After all, in inventory management, saving just 1 percent here and there can quickly add up.

Any final comments?

My time at Slimstock has already highlighted a couple of ways I could have developed better policies in my previous positions. I believe that most companies would benefit from having an external supply chain professional to complete an analysis. After all, sometimes you just can’t see the wood because of the trees, and the insights from an outsider can yield unexpected results.
